The motive features the head of a Timber wolf in semi-profile, which clearly stands out from the puristic background of the coin due to its detailed structure. The Timber Wolf (Canis lupus lycaon), also known as the American Gray Wolf, is native to the deciduous, mixed and coniferous forests of the northern United States and Canada, where it lives and hunts in packs of 20 to 30 animals led by a lead pair. The wolves feed primarily on elk and deer, but also prey on smaller mammals. The life expectancy of the Timber Wolf, whose coat color can vary from white and gray to black, is up to 20 years in the wild.
