On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the St. Peter's Basilica, the Monnaie de Paris has issued this silver coin in proof quality. The Basilica of St. Peter was built from 1506 to 1626 and is located in the center of Italy's capital on the territory of the independent state of the Vatican City. Known worldwide, the basilica is one of the seven pilgrim churches of Rome. The design of the commemorative coin depicts Pope Benedict XVI in front of St. Peter's Basilica. On the upper edge of the coin, the inscription "800 ANS de la BASILIQUE SAINT-PIERRE" is engraved. The reverse features the blueprint of St. Peter's Basilica, including St. Peter's Square in front of it. Also included in the design is the inscription "LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ", the denomination "1 1/2 EURO" and the year of issue "2006". The limited commemorative silver coin is delivered in the original box including a certificate of authenticity.
