On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Tour de France, the Monnaie de Paris has issued this silver coin in proof quality, which thematizes the Alpine stage. The motive depicts two participants of the traditional race in the foreground and some spectators cheering the athletes during the climb in the right half of the picture. Along the bottom edge of the coin is the inscription "CENTENAIRE DU TOUR DE FRANCE".
The Tour de France was first held in 1903 and was the first stage race of its kind in history. The race took place between July 1st and 19th, 1903, and included a total of six stages covering a total distance of 2,428 kilometers. The winner of the first Tour was the Frenchman Maurice Garin. The limited commemorative coin "100 Years Tour de France - Alpine stage" is delivered in the original box including a certificate of authenticity.
