The Monnaie de Paris dedicates the series Masterpieces of Museums to the great works of art that are exhibited or have been created in France. The 2023 issues of the series are released under the theme "Heroines in painting". This rectangular commemorative coin in color has been issued in honor of the eminent French painter Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) and his work "Liberty Leading the People". The world-famous painting was created in 1830 and depicts the barricade fights in Paris on the second of the three days of the Revolution. It was the bloodiest day and the decisive turning point of the uprising. In the center of the painting is Marianne with the French flag in her hand, and little Gavroche at her side. Today, this work is kept in the Louvre Museum. The motive of the 250 Euro silver coin depicts a detailed image of the painting in color as well as the original title of the painting "LA LIBERTÉ GUIDANT LE PEUPLE". The name of the artist, Eugène Delacroix, and the year of issue, 2023, are also part of the design. The reverse of the coin features different views of French museums, as well as the inscription "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" and the denomination "250 EURO".

Eugène Delacroix was an influential French painter of the Romantic period in the 19th century. His works were characterized by their passionate, dramatic and exotic motives. Delacroix had a great influence on the Impressionists and is considered one of the precursors of Expressionism. The limited commemorative 1/2 kilo silver coin is delivered in the original box including a certificate of authenticity.
