Born on September 14, 1804 in Dorset, England, John Gould was one of the most famous ornithologists and animal painters of the 19th century. His travels and research resulted in several works on the animal world of Australia, including colorful drawings of the kookaburra. The kookaburra, also known as Laughing Hans, is a large, characteristic kingfisher that is mainly found in Australia and New Guinea. It belongs to the kingfisher family and is known for its distinctive call, which sounds like human laughter. Kookaburras are predominantly arboreal and can be found in a variety of habitats, including forests, savannahs and urban areas. They feed mainly on small vertebrates such as snakes, lizards, small birds and insects, which they catch with their powerful beaks. Their hunting technique is impressive: they often sit on a branch and keep an eye out for prey before striking at lightning speed. The 1 Oz kookaburra silver proof coin is delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
