The antique finish silver coin was issued by the New Zealand Mint to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the famous fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons™. Struck from two ounces of 99.9% silver in antique finish, the design of the coin is based on the polyhedral D20 game cube and also shows the "Red Dragon" character, which also partly defines the shape of the coin. The logo for the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons™ is also included in the design. The visual design of the reverse was also modeled on a game cube and also features the official coat of arms of Niue as well as the denomination and year of issue.

Dungeons & Dragons™ (often abbreviated "D&D") is a game that focuses on the imagination of the players. While a game master acts as narrator and referee, the other players form a group of adventurers who explore fantastic worlds and must solve various quests along the way. The game thrives on the creativity of the collective and dispenses with the classic outcome of victory or defeat. Dragons are explicitly depicted in the game as various types of large, intelligent, magical beasts defined by a combination of their behavior and either the color of their scales or their elemental affinity. The mintage is limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide.
