The series "Harry Potter™ - Magical Creatures" from the New Zealand Mint is dedicated to the magnificent creatures from the magical world of Harry Potter™. The rectangular coin was struck from one ounce of 99.9% silver in proof quality and features a depiction of the Thestral™. The background is in shades of blue and shows clouds and the night sky. Three blue zirconia stones are incorporated above the mysterious creature. The reverse features the effigy of King Charles III as well as the year of issue “2024” and the denomination "TWO DOLLARS".

Thestrals™ are magical creatures that outwardly resemble both a horse and a reptile. Their bodies are completely black and appear skeletal, while their eyes are white, fixed and pupil-less and their black wings look like oversized bat wings. Thestrals™ are often wrongly perceived as an omen of misfortune, as they are only visible to people who have already seen death. In fact, Thestrals™ are clever, social and loyal creatures that can tell friend from foe. At Hogwarts, trained Thestrals™ are used to transport students from Hogsmeade station to the school building in carriages. The rectangular silver coin is delivered in the original box of the New Zealand Mint including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
