"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." - This Lord of the Rings™ silver coin in antique finish was issued by the New Zealand Mint to honor J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy trilogy. The motive features a hobbit-hole in the beautiful Shire. The copyright as well as the weight and fineness are also included in the design. The reverse depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions "NIUE", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue and the denomination.

The Shire is known for its rolling hills, lush forests and rich farmland. It is the home of the Hobbits and the starting point for the adventures of Bilbo™, Fodo™ and Sam™. It is located in the northwest of Middle Earth and has a developed infrastructure with roads, post offices and taverns in every village.
