This rectangular coin struck by the New Zealand Mint is the second issue in the new "Lord of the Rings Movie Poster Series" and is dedicated to the second part of the fantasy trilogy "The Two Towers". The motive features a replica image of the original movie poster for "The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers™". The reverse shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the denomination and the year of issue.

With box-office revenues totaling $947.8 million, "The Two Towers" was one of the most financially successful theatrical films of 2002. Not only did the blockbuster receive unbroken praise from fans and critics, but it also received a total of six nominations at the 2003 Academy Awards, including two wins in major categories. Like the first part, the second installment of the film series is based on the successful 1954 book trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, with the title referring to the alliance between Orthnac, Tower of Isengard and seat of the wizard Saruman, and Barad-dûr, the Dark Fortress of the ruler Sauron in Mordor. The plot of the film seamlessly follows the events of the first part "The Fellowship of the Ring" and continues with the adventures of the now separated members of the Fellowship. Not only do the people of Middle Earth have to fight against the power of the One Ring and its owner Sauron, but they also have to face the army of the Uruk-Hai of the evil wizard Saruman.
