The eighth issue of the new The Lord of the Rings™ Classic Series is dedicated to Gollum™. The coin was struck by the New Zealand Mint from one ounce of 99.9% silver in proof quality. The design features a colorful depiction of Gollum, crouching on a rock. The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination and the year of issue. Gollum was originally known as a Hobbit named Sméagol. When he was fishing in the Anduin with his cousin Déagol, the latter discovered the One Ring of Power. Since Sméagol was so taken with the ring, he strangled his cousin to claim it as his own. Outcasted from his family and the other villagers, he retreated into the Misty Mountains and became the figure of Gollum over a period of 400 years. He has a split personality and calls the One ring "my own, my precious." He plays a key role in both of Tolkien's stories "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" in determining the fate over Middle Earth. The colored Lord of the Rings™ - Gollum™ silver proof coin is delivered in the original wooden box and an illustrated Lord of the Rings™ packaging, including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
