The third issue of the Mythical Creatures series was struck from two ounces of 99.9% silver in proof quality and is dedicated to the Sea Serpent. The motive in color shows a depiction of a gigantic sea serpent in the green-bluish shimmering sea. Above is the inscription "THE SEA SERPENT". The reverse shows the coat of arms of Niue, which is surrounded by nautical details. The weight and fineness as well as the denomination and year of issue are also included in the design.

Sea serpents are among the most fearsome sea monsters and appear in stories by the Roman poet Virgil. Sightings of the mystical creatures by sailors, which are said to have taken place mainly in the North Atlantic and in bays off Norway, presumably go back to the so-called oarfish, a deep-sea fish with an approximately 8-metre-long, snake-like body. Limited to 750 pieces worldwide, the 2 Oz High relief silver coin is delivered in the original wooden box including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
