The silver coin in color is dedicated to James Cook's second voyage of discovery. The captain and his crew were commissioned by the British government in 1772 to find the mysterious continent “Terra Australis Incognita” and set off several times to the region south of the Arctic Circle for this purpose. The second voyage was thus one of the first scientifically motivated circumnavigations. However, the hoped-for sight of the mysterious continent south of the Cape of Good Hope did not materialize, so that James Cook doubted the existence of the South Pole, which was to be discovered only 50 years later.
The motive in color features a depiction of one of his sailing ships, the HMS Resolution, as well as the silhouette of Captain James Cook in profile in the background. The inscription “THE SECOND VOYAGE OF CAPTAIN COOK - SEARCH FOR TERRA AUSTRALIS - 1772-1775” is also included in the design. The reverse features the portrait of King Charles III as well as the weight, fineness, denomination and year of issue. The silver coin commemorating James Cook's second voyage is limited to 750 pieces worldwide and is delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
