The Black Proof Ultra High Relief silver coin was struck from 3 ounces of 99.99% silver and is dedicated to the sinister Ferryman of the dead, also known as Charon. The motive features a depiction of Charon crossing the Acheron River in his boat. In the water are some silhouettes of deceased people. In the background is the entrance to the world of the dead, while in the foreground several hands are trying to reach out of the water for the ferryman's boat. In the boat are coins with which Charon had to be paid according to Greek mythology. If the payment was not successful, the souls of the dead had to wander as shadows on the banks of the river for 100 years before the aged ferryman subsequently allowed them to pass free of charge. To spare the recently deceased this fate, the ancient Greeks attached great importance to a correct burial ritual, which included the placement of a coin (obolus) for Charon under the tongue of the dead.
