Early civilizations believed that the celestial bodies had an influence on earthly affairs. While observing the night sky over the course of a year, the Babylonians identified 12 different patterns of stars through which the sun seemed to travel. The roots of astrology lay in the idea that a person's character and fate were related to the arrangement of these celestial bodies at the time of his birth. The twelve patterns we know today as the signs of the zodiac - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces - are arranged in a circle on the motive of this colored antique finish coin and depicted in Art Nouveau style. The names of the zodiac signs, their pictograms and a stylized representation of the sun, moon and stars in the center of the coin complete the design.
