Exclusive special edition for the 35th Anniversary of the Issuance of China Panda Gold Coins. Spherical Striking Technology - To assure the coin’s ideal spherical shape and map the images, engineers at the China Mint created a special six-piece die setup, with hammer (top) and anvil (bottom) dies, joined by four collar dies on the sides. The planchets were given a slightly raised, ridged area at the upper pole. This was necessary so the spherical shape remains intact during and after the striking process. Due to the attention to detail necessary to produce these, only 120 could be produced per day, compared the thousands of regular coins that can be struck. Each die was laser engraved with the various panda designs before being polished and fitted to a spherical ball of solid silver. Using a hydraulic press, each silver sphere is struck several times, from all sides to ensure the design is emblazoned on the blank. After each striking, the spheres are hand inspected to ensure that the design is seamless. The circumference of this Spherical Panda features 35 years’ worth of gold panda reverse designs from 1982 to 2017! The montage of images is set against a background of bamboo. Inscriptions above include “THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ISSUANCE OF CHINESE PANDA GOLD COIN” and the emblem of the China Gold Coin Incorporation (CGCI) and their name in Chinese. The weight and fineness are inscribed below, followed by a 3-leaf bamboo design. The top depicts the Temple of Heaven and the bottom features a large “35” in the center and dual dates 1982/2017, flanked above by “THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ISSUANCE OF CHINESE PANDA GOLD COIN” in Chinese.
