In direct comparison to gold, only very few collector coins are minted and issued in platinum worldwide. These are in particularly high demand on the US market. The shiny precious metal is booming there. Platinum is rare, difficult to mine, has a higher density than gold and is therefore used in many areas of industry due to its unique properties.

The few high-quality coin issues in platinum are a small but very fine collecting area, which is easy to complete because of the limited number of issues. A good example is the "Big Five Series" from South Africa. In total, only 5 one-ounce coins were issued in the first series - with a small mintage of 500 pieces each.
