The second release of the Owls Series is dedicated to the Northern Pygmy Owl. The motive of the 99.9% silver coin depicts an ornamented Northern Pygmy Owl surrounded by decorations at the edge. The inscriptions "OWLS" and "NORTHERN PYGMY OWL" are also included in the design. The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II along with the tuluma, the national symbol of Tokelau. Tuluma is a wooden fishing box used by the fishermen of Tokelau. With a size of up to 19 cm, the Northern Pygmy Owl belongs to the smaller owl species and is a passionate hunter. Its plumage is dark brown and speckled with white, while the eyes are bright yellow. The Northern Pygmy owl can raise its relatively long tail, similar to the wren. The crepuscular bird is mainly found in mountainous regions and in coniferous and mixed forests with old-growth stands.
