With the release of the Big Five II Series, the South African Mint continues the success story of a coveted classic. Once again, the Series includes a total of five coins, all dedicated to South Africa's impressive wildlife. The animals known as the "Big Five" - Elephant - Lion - Buffalo - Rhino - Leopard - are considered emblems and ambassadors of this culturally rich country and represent the African fauna. The third issue is dedicated to the Rhino. The motive shows a detailed close-up of the head of an adult rhino. The inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA", "BIG FIVE 2022" and the South African coat of arms are also part of the design. The reverse shows two halves of a rhino's head. Placing two of these coins next to each other gives a full close-up portrait of a rhino. When several of these coins are placed next to each other, an entire herd of rhinos appears. In the center, the denomination "FIVE RAND", the weight "1OZ" and the fineness "Ag 999" are shown.

Rhinos (Rhinocerotidae) are native to the grasslands and tree savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa. The population is estimated to be about 25,000 white and black rhinos, many of which live in Kruger National Park. After elephants, rhinos are the largest and heaviest land-dwelling mammals in the world. Although the "gray colossi," whose diet consists entirely of plants, seem rather cumbersome, they can reach impressive speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. Sight is rather weak in rhinos, but they have a very fine sense of smell and can detect odors over a distance of several hundred meters under favorable wind conditions. These fascinating giants are in extreme need of protection in view of the rising trend of poaching - the African black rhino in particular is considered to be threatened with extinction. The Big Five II Rhino silver coin in uncirculated quality is limited to only 15,000 pieces worldwide and is delivered in an illustrated blistercard of the South African Mint.
