The fifth issue of the Series Prehistoric Life from the Congo is dedicated to the Archaeopteryx (Archaeopteryx lithographica). The coin struck from 0,5 gram 99.99% pure gold features a depiction of the prehistoric bird holding on to a branch with its claws. Above his spread wings are the inscriptions "PREHISTORIC LIFE", "ARCHAEOPTERYX", "152 - 145 MIO YEARS BC" and the year of issue 2021. The reverse features the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Archaeopteryx is the extinct representative of the primordial birds and lived on Earth about 150 million years ago in the Upper Jurassic period. Its name originates from ancient Greek and translates as "old feather" or "old wing". The ancestral bird is comparable in size to a pigeon, researchers suspect a wingspan of about 50 centimeters and a body weight of no more than 500 grams. Until today, there is a disagreement about the flying skills of Archaeopteryx. It is assumed that he moved mainly on the ground by fast hopping and only occasionally took off into the air. The limited gold coin in proof quality is delivered in a protective capsule.
