The Libertad coin in silver has been struck by the Banco de Mexico since 1982. The coin is also called 'Onza' and has no fixed denomination. The motive depicts the goddess of victory, Victoria, as a symbol of Mexico's independence. The two volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl can be seen in the background. It is the only silver bullion coin in the world with a fineness of 999/1000 fine silver without embossed denomination. However, it is accepted as a currency based on the market value of its gold or silver content. Since 1991, the Casa de Moneda has also issued a Libertad gold bullion coin.
